A previously denied proposal to put a highway through the Book Cliffs has returned. Wildlife conservation groups and local non-profits question the motivations for the highway, and fear it could cause habitat loss and negatively impact wildlife.

An audit of Uintah County released Wednesday found a number of weaknesses in the county’s government spending. These weaknesses included lack of financial control, improper spending of COVID-19 relief funds, and inadequate recording, tracking, and reporting procedures.

As the mineral lease money that comes from the oilfields shrinks, Uintah County officials are making tough decisions about how to fund services like the fire department and animal control.

“Summer slump” is a phrase used to describe the digression students may make while they are out of school if they don’t read or engage academically. Because students throughout the state have already been at home for months due to the pandemic, there is concern that this phenomena will be even worse this year. A Utah judge is ordering 36 people to explain why they didn't show up for jury duty after their absences forced a mistrial last week in the case of three men accused of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl.

Court officials say the absent jurors will be served summons to appear in court, and they could face fines or other penalties.
