Coronavirus Restrictions Increase Around The State

Coronavirus restrictions have been loosening throughout Utah over the last few months but at the Governor's press conference on Tuesday, parts of Utah will be brought back into stricter restrictions.

Rich Saunders, the interim director of the Utah Department of Health, addressed the public during the governor’s press conference about the direction Utah is going with the pandemic. While some areas of the state are transitioning to a green “low-level”  restriction, others are moving back to an orange, “moderate” restriction level.

“We’re seeing movement in the wrong direction, and specifically in Utah County with regards to trends and percent positivity," said Saunders."Specifically, the Orem and Provo area are experiencing large spikes that warrant a change in our approach at this time. Therefore, on behalf of the Utah Department of Health in the unified command, I'm issuing a public health order to move Provo and Oram from yellow or ‘low’ restriction to the orange or ‘moderate’ restriction level.”

In order to be moved back to orange from yellow, Saunders said some of the things that have to happen are a 14-day rolling average greater than 35 new daily cases per 100,000 population, ICU and non-ICU utilization is above 68%, and the seven-day positivity rate average is greater than 20%

There will be an exception to the orange restrictions in Utah County said Saunders.

“We will allow team sports to continue but with no spectators. The current guidelines of orange do not allow engagement of sports to occur,” said Saunders.

The transition will occur at 11:59pm on  Wednesday  September 23.
