Latter-Day Saint Leader Gong Tests Positive For COVID-19

A high-ranking leader with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has tested positive for the coronavirus.

Church spokesman Eric Hawkins said Tuesday in a statement that Gerrit W. Gong and his wife were tested after they learned they might have been exposed to the virus. Gong skipped this past weekend's church conference where other top leaders gathered to deliver speeches to members watching from home. Hawkins says Gong and his wife have mild symptoms. The 66-year-old Gong became the first member of Asian ancestry on the previously all-white leadership panel when he was chosen for the post in 2018.
