Utah residents and state officials gathered at the state capitol Monday for a special Memorial Day event to honor Utahns who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.According to KUTV, flags lined the front of the capitol, along with the names of Utah’s servicemen and servicewomen who’ve died protecting the country. Taps, a national song of remembrance, was played and there was a wreath-laying ceremony held in their honor.
The ceremony was unable to be held last year due to COVID-19, so the names of Utah veterans who passed away over the last year were read. Over 650 veterans from Utah have died since March 2020.
Throughout the state’s history, about 3,000 Utahs had died while serving in the military.
