Refugees fleeing Afghanistan were welcomed to a meet-and-greet at the Utah Islamic Center mosque Monday night in West Jordan. More than 100 people were at the mosque to show their support for the refugees. For security reasons, no one knows who the refugees are right away, even those who are helping them acclimate to their new lives. Meet-and-greet gatherings like this are thrown mainly so people can get to know who they will be assisting.
Starting a new life in a new country and learning new languages and entire cultures is daunting. For this reason, several top political leaders recognized the refugees and their accomplishments of making it to Utah. People also filled the lower level of the mosque with donation items to help the refugees start their journeys.
