Charlie's In The House: A Preview For The Lyric Repertory Company Theater Season

The start of Cache Valley’s local theater season is just a couple weeks away. For the Lyric Repertory Company, according to artistic director Richie Call, the big news is six hot shows in three cool venues. The Lyric is staging six shows this year, rather than its traditional four, by moving three of those productions into theaters on the Utah State University campus.

The repertory company’s 2019 season will feature the classic drama A Raisin in the Sun, a musical murder-mystery farce Murder for Two and the comedic one-man show Size Matters. Those productions will be staged at the traditional Caine Lyric Theatre in downtown Logan.

On the USU campus, the jukebox musical  Mama Mia is slated for the Morgan Theatre, a state-of-the-art venue with a thrust stage in the Chase Fine Arts Center. Two additional shows, the drama Clybourne Park and a staged reading of The Great Society will be presented in the intimate Black Box Theatre, also in the Chase Center.

In addition to offering two additional shows, the Lyric company is also adding a spotlight concert in the Morgan Theatre to its summer season. That event will be a fundraiser for the Lyric Endowment with featured actors from the 2019 season performing opening numbers, duets and solos from recent Broadway shows.

The company’s associate artistic director, Jason Spelbring, says that the Spotlight Concert event will also be an opportunity to introduce the 2020 season to Lyric audiences.

Call adds that the 2019 season will also mark the Lyric’s renewed commitment to diversity and inclusiveness. That means that the casts of Lyric productions will reflect America’s melting pot of races and cultures from now on, regardless of the subject matter of those shows.

The Lyric Repertory Company’s 2019 season will kick off Friday, June 14, with the premier of A Raisin in the Sun, and continue through Saturday, Aug. 3.
