Preservation Utah will hold a tour of the Reed Smoot house in Provo on Saturday August 15th at 3:30.
One of Utah's most important and beautiful historic homes is opening its doors to us. Senator Reed Smoot and Allie Smoot's 1892 Victorian Eclectic home is unusual for at least two reasons: first, since 1892, the Smoot family has continuously lived in the home, respecting its original layout; and second, the current Smoot family are creatives who've styled their home using original furnishings, art, and dishware.
Expect to learn about the architectural elements famed architect Richard Kletting used inside and out, along with the chance to see design details like early Utah artists' works, original fireplace mantels and tile, and the Smoot family's Stickley furniture. The tour includes the main floor and garden. Reed Smoot, cinematographer and descendant of the Senator, will lead the tour.
Preservation Utah hosts a Polygamous Wives Bicycle Tour in Provo on Saturday August 15 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. This tour includes an exterior visit to two historic shops and one home, as well as entry into the preserved Victorian home of one of A.O. Smoot’s wives on Center Street.
Step inside Provo’s historic homes to uncover how the end of official LDS polygamy in 1890 reshaped lives, architecture, and a community in transition.
This unique tour explores how the post-Manifesto period of LDS history—marked by the 1890 declaration by President Wilford Woodruff ending the Church's official practice of polygamy—continues to echo through Provo’s historic homes. Centered on the preserved dwellings of four devoted 19th-century polygamous wives (each from a different family), this tour uses architecture as a lens to examine the personal and cultural disruptions brought about by sweeping religious change.
Like their diaries, their dwellings offer rare insight into their lives. This tour includes an exterior visit to two historic shops and one home, as well as entry into the preserved Victorian home of one of A.O. Smoot’s wives on Center St. These structures are more than just buildings—they are testimonies to resilience, adaptation, and the hidden layers of Utah’s complex past.

Seleny Joanne OPEN International Karate Championship 2026 is Saturday August 29th at the Utah Military Academy in Lehi.
Join us for the Seleny Joanne Cup 2026 (SJ Cup ’26), a Utah inter-regional OPEN karate championship organized by the Seleny Joanne Karate Association, a nonprofit organization, in loving memory of Seleny Joanne Crosby, a former karate champion who was called to heaven far too early after a tragic traffic accident. This meaningful event honors her beautiful legacy and passion for karate by bringing together all ages, all ranks, all karate styles, and all martial artists, including athletes with disabilities, for a day of competition, sportsmanship, and unity. The tournament includes kata, kumite, kobudo/weapons, family kata, and para-karate divisions, making it a welcoming and inspiring event for the whole martial arts community.
The day before the tournament, Kancho Masaya Kohama, World President of the International Shotokan Shobukan Karate Association of Japan, will lead world-class kata (forms) and kumite (sparring) seminars. This is a truly rare and special opportunity for Utah and for the entire United States to train directly with a legendary karate master from Japan. Together, these events create an unforgettable weekend of learning, competition, friendship, and tribute.
