The man charged with murder and kidnapping in the case of missing five-year-old Lizzy Shelley made an initial appearance in court on Monday.
Alexander Whipple was led into the courtroom in chains and a striped jumpsuit. The 21-year-old swayed and fidgeted while Judge Kevin Allen read off a list of his latest charges, including murder, kidnapping, obstruction of justice, and desecration of a body. Whipple did not speak.
The judge said that given the charges, the court would not allow bail at this time.
In a press conference outside the courthouse, Cache County Attorney James Swink said the state intends to make sure Whipple spends the rest of his life behind bars.
Whipple is next due back in court on June 24. Lizzy Shelley’s funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon in Logan.
