Gov. Cox Calls For Special Session On Wednesday

The Utah Legislature will gather on Wednesday for a special session. Gov. Spencer Cox issued the call for the special session on Monday and approved 22 topics for discussion, including budget issues related to funds from the American Rescue Plan and technical changes to bills passed earlier this year. The press release announcing the session stated that several bills were added to the list at the request of lawmakers, including the prohibition on face mask requirements in schools and changes to electronic cigarettes.

Despite requests, Cox did not include Critical Race Theory or Second Amendment Sanctuary State as approved topics for legislative discussion. In a letter to lawmakers, he wrote that this is because he believes these topics would be better addressed during the annual 45-day session, rather than in an expedited format.
