Gov. Spencer Cox expressed his optimism about “soaring” vaccine distribution in a Tweet Tuesday, saying he believes Utahns will be able to celebrate maskless in large gatherings by the 4th of July this year. However, that depends on if the state receives the number of vaccines it’s expecting in the coming weeks and months. It’s more of a possibility if case rates continue trending downward and vaccine distribution runs smoothly.
According to KUTV, Utah was receiving 8,000 to 12,000 doses per week in December. Currently, Utah is reportedly getting 60,000 to 70,000 per week. At this rate, health experts predict 1.6 million people can be immunized by the beginning of May.
Cox also wrote that he’s “really baffled” by pessimism he keeps hearing from because he thinks all of the science, including data and concerns about new variants, is “overwhelmingly positive.”
