Utahn James Lawrence, also known as the Iron Cowboy, is just over one month shy of setting out to do what many are calling impossible. Lawrence will be competing in 50 Ironman competitions in all 50 states in 50 consecutive days.
“50 days in a row we’re going to do the Ironman distance which is a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and then follow that up with a 26.2 marathon run,” Lawrence said.
Though many have expressed their doubts, Lawrence said he’s ready to show the world what he’s made of.
Already a Guinness World Record holder for other Ironman feats, Lawrence is hoping to use the publicity from this challenge to bring attention to an issue close to his heart: childhood obesity.
“We’re the first generation where the parents are slated to outlive their children,” Lawrence said.

Lawrence will begin his journey on June 6 in Hawaii and end it on July 25 in Provo, Utah. He’s partnering with the group Quiet Way to raise money for charities working to combat obesity. And he’ll be encouraging people to join him along the way—by running a 5k he’s organized for each of his Ironman events, or by participating in their own fitness challenges from home.
“We want to try and impact and educate as many people as we can, we want to send kids to fit camps and we want to educate the parents, and we plan to go around speaking to the schools and just really getting in front of people and talking about it,” Lawrence said. “I think that’s been one of the biggest problems, is nobody is talking about it.”
