Iron County School Administrator To Take Position In SL County

Cedar High School

An Iron County School administrator at the center of the recent mascot change controversy at Cedar High School has tendered his resignation and set to take a position in Salt Lake County.

Rich Nielson, director of Secondary Schools, represented the district administration on a committee charged with recommending whether or not to change of the nickname, “Redmen” at Cedar High School.  In February, the Iron County School Board voted to “retire” the Redmen nickname.

A group opposed to the change, Voices of Iron County Education has called for the resignation of Nielson and District Superintendent Dr. Shannon Dulaney.  Wednesday, Nielson did resign, to take a principal position in Granite School District where he grew up, and where he started his career in education.

Earlier this month, students at Cedar High voted in favor of calling themselves the “Cedar High Reds” starting next fall.  The group, VOICE is intent on leading an effort to restore the Redmen nickname.
