Governor Herbert Announces Proposed 2021 Budget

U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Governor Gary Herbert announced his budget recommendations for fiscal year 2021 on Wednesday morning.

Herbert’s priorities include a $4.9 billion increase in ongoing funding for K-12 education, as well as an investment of $1.6 billion for higher education.

The recommendations also included a $100 million investment in air quality with $34 million of that going toward public transit and $66 million for electric vehicle charging stations.

Health was another one of the governor’s focuses with a recommendation that $1.2 billion be budgeted for Medicaid and $30.5 million in funding be put towards mental health services.

Herbert said in previous years efficiency in state government has been increased by 27 percent. In the future, he would like to increase that efficiency by another 25 percent in an effort to continue to save money.
