SLC Police Crime Lab Receives National Accreditation

The Salt Lake City Police Department’s crime lab recently passed inspection to receive national forensics accreditation. The American National Standard Institute, the organization that gave the accreditation, looked at the lab’s technicalical qualifications, facilities and policies. Lab director Derek Mears says they spent a lot of time working on their policies so they could meet “national and international standards.”

The lab's accreditation will be reviewed on an on-going basis to make sure standards continue to be met.

Mears says he believes, because technology is always changing, accreditation of crime labs will eventually become required for all forensics labs.
