Unified Fire captain dies due to COVID-19 complications

Officials from the Unified Fire Department say one of their active-duty firefighters died Sunday due to “complications of COVID-19.”Captain Merrill Bone was a 36-year veteran of the fire service. The department says his death is being treated as a line-of-duty death.

The Unified Fire Authority shared on social media that Bone started his career with Salt Lake City Fire where he served as a firefighter and paramedic. He was deployed many times, including to New York City following the events of Sept. 11, 2001. He joined the Unified Fire Authority in 2006 and was promoted to captain in 2013.

The department says Bone's legacy will “live on in the lives of those he helped mentor in his 35 years of dedication to the service of others.”
