Local art studio Jump the Moon is hosting a series of monthly professional demonstration nights to help raise money for their unique nonprofit organization that aims to make art more accessible to those with mental and physical challenges. These monthly events will allow participants to learn new art skills from professional artists.
This month’s event on Thursday, June 20 will feature the watercolorist Joseph Alleman.
Alleman works primarily with watercolor and oil paint and is inspired by the everyday scenes of the contemporary Western US. His stark realistic style, and dull tones capture the beauty of the landscape and create a true sense of place in the rural West.
“You’ll get a chance to meet Joseph, watch him create a painting and explain his technique and approach to art” said Michael Bingham, founder of the Jump the Moon Foundation.
Bingham believes that everyone should be able to express themselves through art and wants Jump The Moon to be a place where all people in the community can gather.
“I’ve worked with people that have waited their whole life to be able to express themselves and communicate through their art, but no one has ever offered them the tools to be able to do that. We have wheelchairs that are painting machines, pendulums that paint and other equipment that make it so that if someone has a disability challenge, they can still make art," Bingham said.
He has worked with the assisted technology lab at Utah State University and is currently working with the engineering club to create an eye-reading device that will potentially allow people who are only able to move their eyes to paint.
