Utah lawmakers will hold a veto override session Wednesday afternoon to try to undo Gov. Gary Herbert's rejection of two bills expanding their powers.

The Republican governor in March vetoed a bill that would force the attorney general to release legal opinions requested by lawmakers and another bill allowing lawmakers to defend state laws in court, a role that belongs to the attorney general.

Lawmakers and Herbert have been in a power struggle since Herbert last year set a special election to replace Republican Jason Chaffetz in Congress.

Legislators urged the governor to call them into a special session so they could set last-minute rules for the election but Herbert refused. They also threatened to sue when Attorney General Sean Reyes refused to release an opinion about the election's legality. Reyes later released an opinion siding with the governor.
