Gov., Lawmakers Sign ‘Equity’ Bills Aimed At Housing, Homelessness, Hunger

Gov. Spencer Cox, Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson and several other lawmakers met in Salt Lake City on Tuesday to cerimonelly sign six bills aimed at equity. The bills are aimed at issues like hunger, homelessness, housing affordability and immigration.According to KSL, Cox said the ceremonial signing was meant to highlight several bills that deserved more attention but got “lost in the shuffle” of the 2021 Legislature. Cox said his administration focuses on “equality and opportunity and making sure that everyone in the state has the same opportunities as everyone else,” which is what he said they were celebrating at the signing.

Some of the highlighted bills include S.B. 141, which creates a Task Force on Food Security, H.B. 404, which creates the Utah Immigration Assistance Center in the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and S.B. 164, which allows the state to conduct surplus property inventory to determine viability for affordable housing projects.
