Utah Law Makers Repeal Tax Reform Bill

Matilyn Mortensen

The tax reform bill passed last month by the Utah State Legislature was repealed by lawmakers Tuesday morning. In the House, the vote to repeal the bill passed 70-1 and in the Senate the vote was unanimous.

Earlier on Tuesday it was announced that the citizen referendum on the bill had reached the number of signatures needed for the issue to make it to the ballot. 117,154 signatures have been verified-- about twelve hundred more than needed.

The signature threshold was met in 25 of the state’s 29 counties. However, because of the repeal voters will not be weighing in on this issue.

Today’s repeal came after Governor Gary Herbert announced last week that due to public concerns over the bill lawmakers would repeal the bill and work to draft new legislation to address the state’s tax structure needs.
