Due to increased popularity at Zion National Park’s Angels Landing hiking trail, the park is proposing a day-use permit lottery system for hikers in 2022. The permit would cover the chained section of the trail. Hikers would still be able to walk the West Rim Trail up to Scout Lookout without a permit.
The proposed fees - six dollars for the application and three dollars per person after that - would cover the cost to operate the lottery platform and manage the program in the field. Permits would allow for groups of up to six people, with identification, to access the chained portion of the trail. Public comment on the lottery system is currently being accepted through September 12th on the National Park Service's Planning, Environment, and Public Comment website.
