Large Gatherings Are Increasing In Cache County. How Is that Impacting COVID-19 Case Numbers?

Large gatherings and events have been increasing in Cache Valley over the past month, and with that comes the concern of increased coronavirus cases.

After the Cache County fair last month, many people were worried the community would see a coronavirus outbreak. But although case numbers in the county are trending up, there has not been a significant spike.

“As far as I know, we haven't even had any cases that were leaked to the fair as a potential source of exposure,” said Josh Greer with the Bear River Health Department.

Greer said there is a concern that people who got the virus at the fair may not have gotten tested— especially since the number of people in the county getting tested is going down, despite the capacity to test more individuals.

In addition to the fair, people were also worried about what could happen to cause numbers as school started back up. Some school districts across the state have been seeing spikes in cases since the start of school. But so far, that doesn’t seem to be happening in Cache County.

“Schools have been in about two weeks now," said Greer. "And we are not seeing any substantial spike. We have had a couple high days of numbers. But that is mostly due to the outbreak at the jail that the sheriff issued a press release about a couple days ago.”

Greer attributes these decreases in spreading to the fact that mask wearing and social distancing are becoming more commonplace.
