DWR considers a drawing program for elk hunting permits

Utah Division of Wildlife Resources issued more elk hunting permits this year due to increased demand and the permits still sold out in less than a day.

Planning ahead for 2022, UDWR officials are considering including elk permits in the big game permit drawing. The competition for first-come, first-serve tickets has created panic and overloaded sales systems, and the DWR hopes that a drawing program will help alleviate these issues.

The division proposes to pilot a drawing program for 2022 before assessing the pros and cons of both methods and deciding how to proceed. The public can submit comments online through the UDWR website.
