Park City council members are planning to vote on changes to the city's lighting codes to improve views of the night sky there. If approved, the change would also improve the city's chances of becoming an International Dark Sky Community.
City planner Liz Jackson said reducing light pollution there would save energy and support human, animal and ecosystem health. She says the low direct lighting would also improve public safety.
Four of Utah's five national parks, as well as various national monuments, state and local parks have received International Dark Sky designation to reduce light pollution.
In 2018 Torrey, in Wayne County, was designated by the International Dark-Sky Association as Utah's first Dark Sky Community.
Helper, in Carbon County, received the status earlier this year.
