A Utah organization that supports individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities is partnering with Northern Utah law enforcement agencies to raise funds for sports programs.

Special Olympics Utah has been supporting community sports training and competitions for individuals with different abilities since 1971. Cache County Sheriff Officer, Enrique Meza, said his office will join efforts to raise funds for these sports during a truck pull later this month.

“This event is geared toward the Utah Special Olympics. We do all of this to raise money for the Utah Special Olympics group. It is a public event, many people will be able to come, we will have food trucks so people can buy food to see the event, and so people can be a little more comfortable,” Meza said.

The truck pulling event will happen in an area between Logan’s Home Depot and the Cache Valley Mall Thursday, July 29 beginning at 6pm.

“This group is based all over Utah, it's like the branch of a tree. We had this event in 2008, we had a similar event that they called the “truck pull”, and we want to start that event again every two years or every year,” Meza said.

Individuals with intellectual disabilities from Northern Utah will join members from other teams and agencies for the fundraising event.

“People with disabilities, Utah State football team, special police teams like Logan SWAT, Cache County, other agencies, and the jail special teams," Meza said.

Meza said that like other events held to support different special interests, Special Olympics Utah fundraising events were cancelled last year because of The COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have not organized things recently because of COVID," he said. "But we are already putting out more events, a month and a half ago we had a torch run: we ran with a torch from the center of Logan Canyon to Merlin Olsen Park, and then the Special Olympics ran a mile and a half with us to feel like part of the team too.”
