Behind The Headlines: Hatch's Retirement and Remembering LDS Church President Thomas S. Monson

After 41 years in office, Orrin Hatch says he will retire from the Senate early next year. The news has led to widespread speculation that Mitt Romney will run to replace Hatch. And The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints mourns the death of President Thomas S. Monson, who led the church for a decade.

At 9 a.m. Friday, Salt Lake Tribune senior religion reporter Peggy Fletcher Stack, Washington Bureau Chief Thomas Burr, government and politics editor Dan Harrie and columnist Robert Gehrke join KCPW’s Roger McDonough to talk about the week’s top stories.

Salt Lake County Council member Jenny Wilson announced her democratic candidacy for Sen. Hatch's seat in July of 2017. She is the daughter of former Salt Lake City Mayor Ted Wilson.

Republican Utah Sen. Lyle Hillyard's son, Matt, passed away Thursday morning. Matt, 42 at his passing, was said to be a staple at the Utah Capitol. A host of Utah's legislators expressed their grief at his passing via social media Thursday.

Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch announced his retirement Tuesday. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, now a resident of Utah, is expected to announce candidacy for the seat, though he has yet to make such an announcement.
