The group Utah Women & Leadership Project, based out of Utah Valley University, publishes studies on how Utah women and girls are doing in academics, politics and workplaces. Recently they did a follow up on a 2013 study called Utah Women in STEM on how Utah women are doing in STEM fields, namely how many are graduating with certificates in those areas and how many express interests in them.

Girls in Aviation takes flight

The Girls in Aviation program was started just one year ago by the Cache Makers group based out of Logan, UT. The program focuses on exposing girls ages nine to 15 to the aviation industry as well as broad STEM, or Science Technology Engineering and Math, opportunities.

Salt Lake City was ranked seventh in the nation for being the best metropolitan area for STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) professions, according to a WalletHub study. The report ranks 100 of the largest metro areas in the nation on their suitability for STEM professionals and includes over a dozen metrics which range from per-capita job openings for STEM graduates to annual median wage growth for STEM jobs.

Professor Edward Reeve, at Utah State University's School of Applied Sciences, Technology and Education, was recently elected president of the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association. Training new engineering and technology educators has been a major focus of the Obama administration’s emphasis on STEM education and Reeve, a self-proclaimed “old shop teacher,” built his career around educating the engineering and technology teachers of tomorrow.
