The Academic Minute, one of the programs brought to you during Morning Editionand All Things Considered on Utah Public Radio, features researchers from colleges and universities, keeping listeners abreast of research and what's interesting and exciting. Hosted by Lynn Pasquerella, president of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, The Academic Minute features a different professor each day, drawing experts from top research institutions.
On March 2, 2020, Joyce Kinkead, Distinguished Professor of English at Utah State University was featured on The Academic Minute, talking about “Slow Writing,” which she says is part of the lifestyle movement that asks people to consider living in more mindful ways. Similar to Slow Food, Slow Travel, and Slow Fashion, Slow Writing occurs when writers savor the act of writing, choosing pen, ink and paper for aesthetic and tactile properties.
Kinkead said, “I’m seeing evidence that people care about the tools they use for writing. Pen nerds pay attention to the unveiling of new fountain pens. Handmade cards underscore the message that the sender cares about the recipient.” Slow writing is a reaction against industrialization and materialism.
Two other professors have been featured on The Academic Minute. Edwin Stafford, professor of marketing, talked about Air Pollution Posters and how teaching kids about pollution changed their parents’ perspective in the April 19, 2019 edition of The Academic Minute. Antje Graul, assistant professor of marketing, discussed a “Sharing Economy” in the May 15, 2019 posting.
