Elk Hunter In Critical Condition After Being Shot Near Brian Head

Chris Holmes

A man is in critical but stable condition after being accidentally shot while elk hunting near Brian Head in Iron County.

Iron County Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call early Sunday morning.  The caller indicated that a companion had suffered a gunshot wound and that the party was on its way to Cedar City via State Route-14.  Gold Cross Ambulance met the group at milepost three.  The man was stabilized and transported to Cedar City Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

The incident occurred near Brian Head.  The victim is a 34-year-old male, shot in the right abdomen by a 300-caliber rifle.  So far investigators have determined the parties involved were hunting elk, but were not wearing hunter orange.  A member of the same hunting party fired the shot.  It is not yet determined if charges will be filed.
