City leaders voted unanimously for a plan to develop a nuclear training and research campus on their USU campus. It marks an early step in bringing a nuclear energy industrial revolution to Utah.

A new generation of small nuclear reactors is poised to come online in the next few years. Safety experts worry the Trump administration has chosen speed over safety.

One reactor in Utah and two others in Idaho had already "gone critical," or managed to turn on a test reactor. The Trump administration wanted at least three by the country's 250th birthday.

In a test at the Idaho National Lab last week, workers were able to turn the reactor on and safely control a nuclear fission reaction, though it hasn't produced electricity yet.
