Crossing Borders: Pastry Chef's American Dream Is 'Sweetly Divine'

Mark Grodkowski is a pastry chef. He immigrated from Poland when he was 17, crossing the borders of country and language, creating his American dream. He currently owns and operates Sweetly Divine, a pastry shop and cafe in Logan.

The UPR Original Series "Crossing Borders" is a yearlong storytelling project between UPR and the USU Office of Global Engagement - providing services for international students and scholars; and facilitating study abroad opportunities for students and faculty. Details found here.

I grew up in Smithfield Utah, started listening to Utah Public Radio as a child, and became part of the UPR team in college. Here, I get to host Saturday mornings and keep the Community Calendar updated, sharing Utah events with everyone.
Mary got hooked on oral histories while visiting Ellis Island and hearing the recorded voices of immigrants that had passed through. StoryCorps drew her to UPR. After she retired from teaching at Preston High, she walked into the station and said she wanted to help. Kerry put her to work taking the best 3 minutes out of the 30 minute interviews recorded in Vernal. Passion kicked in. Mary went on to collect more and more stories and return them to the community on UPR's radio waves. Major credits to date: Utah Works, One Small Step, and the award winning documentary Ride the Rails.
